7: Do you think that the world will be a better or a worse place 100 years from now?
One small opening admission: this answer is very much from the mind of one who has enjoyed the benefits of living comfortably in the United States his whole life.
According to the news, the world is becoming worse and worse by the second (save for the few to show some cute animal or baby). My whole life seems to have been lived in a warring world because of Iran Contra, Grenada, Russia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq, Korea, Venezuela, among others. Murder, abortion, and other crimes seem to be at an all time high. School shootings are like clockwork and we have had terrorist blow up (or attempt to) an OKC federal building, the World Trade Towers, and the Pentagon. How in the world could the world be better in 100 years?
As a fan a history, I think the world continues to be better over time. If you go over to TED.com and search for Stephen Pinker, he has a fascinating presentation of how we think the world is getting worse in part because our standards are so much higher.
Think of it this way, is the world better or worse now than in 1913? Do a google in the year and ask yourself if you really want to be a citizen of that time period society. My answer is no. Same with 1813, 1713, etc. There were some cool historical events that took place in those years, but I really, really like my wi-fi and air conditioning. Also, look at the statistics regarding crime. It is much better today per capita. We are less likely to die before five than 100 years ago.
All of this to say, I think the world will be a better place in 100 years.
